Who collects what in Powys

Powys County Council is a single-tier council, so it runs bin collections, kerbside recycling, garden waste and the household waste recycling centres. Many Welsh councils ask you to sort recycling into separate boxes or bags at the kerb.

Bank holidays and Powys bin days

When a bank holiday lands on or before your collection day, Powys may collect as normal or move collections later in the week. These are the next bank holidays in England and Wales:

DateBank holiday
Friday, 25 December 2026Christmas Day
Monday, 28 December 2026Boxing Day (substitute day)
Friday, 1 January 2027New Year's Day

Christmas and New Year cause the biggest changes. See Christmas bin collections for what usually happens.

Recycling rules in Wales

Welsh councils have some of the highest household recycling rates in the world. Many collect recycling every week and ask households to sort materials into separate boxes, bags or caddies at the kerbside rather than mixing everything in one bin. General waste is often collected less often, and some councils limit how many black bags you can put out.

Powys bin questions

How do I find my bin collection day in Powys?
Enter your postcode on this page to confirm that Powys collects your bins, then use the Powys bin day checker. Pick your address and it shows the next date for each bin. Copy those dates into our bin calendar to get reminders.
Do Powys bin days change on bank holidays?
Many councils keep normal collection days on most bank holidays and only change around Christmas and New Year, while others move every collection in a bank holiday week by a day. Powys publishes any changes on its website before each holiday. Our bank holiday page lists the dates for England and Wales.
What should I do if Powys misses my bin?
Check your bin day first, as collections sometimes run late into the evening. If the rest of your street has been emptied and yours has not, report it on the Powys website, usually within one or two working days. Leave the bin out unless the council says otherwise. Our missed bin guide explains what to expect.
Does Powys collect food waste?
Most councils in Wales collect food waste in a small kitchen caddy and a larger outdoor caddy, though some rural and island areas do not. Check the Powys website for your address.
Where is the tip for Powys?
Powys or its waste partnership runs the local household waste recycling centres. Many tips now need a booking, and vans and trailers may need a permit, so check before you go.
Which postcodes does Powys cover?
Powys collects bins in all or part of these postcode districts: CF44, HR3, HR5, LD1, LD2, LD3, LD4, LD5, LD6, LD7, LD8, NP7, NP8, SA9, SA10, SA11, SY5, SY10, SY15, SY16, SY17, SY18, SY19, SY20, SY21, SY22. Bin Collection Day is independent and not run by Powys County Council. Collection dates and services can change at short notice; the council's website is always the final word.
