Which bin for small electrical items?
Usual answer in the UK
Take-back Shop or take-back point
Kettles, toasters, hair dryers and anything with a plug, battery or cable should not go in a wheelie bin. Take them to the tip or a shop with a take-back scheme. Some councils collect small electricals on recycling day.
Also possible: Household waste recycling centre (the tip); Special collection or specialist disposal.
How to prepare it
Shops that sell electricals have to offer free take-back of a similar item when you buy a new one, and large stores take small items with no purchase needed.
Does every council do this?
Most councils follow the answer above, but bins and sorting rules are set locally, and a few councils still do things differently. If your bin has a sticker, or your council sent a leaflet, follow that. Enter your postcode to go straight to your council's guidance.
