Bin Collection Day

Which bin for cooking oil and fat?

Usual answer in the UK

The tip Household waste recycling centre (the tip)

Small amounts of cooled fat can be soaked up with kitchen roll and put in the food caddy or general waste. Larger amounts of oil go to the tip.

Also possible: General waste bin; Food waste caddy.

Common mistakes

Never pour oil or fat down the sink. It sets and causes blockages.

Does every council do this?

Most councils follow the answer above, but bins and sorting rules are set locally, and a few councils still do things differently. If your bin has a sticker, or your council sent a leaflet, follow that. Enter your postcode to go straight to your council's guidance.
